It Started With One Fish,
One Lid, and an Idea.

A few years ago, we were heavily involved in the reefing community, growing and selling coral frags and helping fellow hobbyists whenever we could.

People would stop by the house to pick up corals, talk about their tanks, compare equipment, share ideas, and just enjoy the hobby together.

It was the kind of environment where one reefer would always try to help another.

At first, I thought he was hiding somewhere in the tank. After a few days of not seeing him, I started searching around the aquarium and eventually found him outside the tank.

He had jumped.

Anyone who has been in this hobby long enough knows that feeling. You spend countless hours building the right environment, maintaining water quality, choosing livestock, and caring for your animals.

And something as simple as an uncovered aquarium can lead to losing a fish you really cared about.

That experience started the search for a better way to protect my tank.

THE SEARCH FOR A LID

I started looking for a better option.

I started looking online for companies that made custom aquarium lids.

There were some great products out there, but at the time, the price was a little more than I wanted to spend.

I had been into woodworking for years and already had experience using CNC machines, so eventually I started thinking:

“Why not try to make one myself?”

That simple idea is really where FragTide began.

I started researching materials and eventually sourced clear polycarbonate.

From there, I had to teach myself how to properly measure an aquarium, design around the glass, returns, overflow, lights, cords, pumps, feeders, and all of the other equipment that makes every reef tank a little different.

There was a lot of measuring, designing, testing, adjusting, and learning.

Eventually, I created my first custom aquarium lid for my own Red Sea Reefer 525 XL.

At the time, that was all it was supposed to be.

“CAN YOU MAKE ONE FOR ME?”

That’s when everything started to change.

Friends and fellow hobbyists would come by the house to pick up corals, and sooner or later someone would look at the tank and ask:

“Where did you get that lid?”

When I told them I had made it myself, the next question was usually:

“Can you make one for me?”

So I made one for a friend.

Then another.

Then someone told someone else.

And before we really realized what was happening, the lids started growing almost entirely through word of mouth.

There was no major advertising campaign. There was no big launch.

There was just one hobbyist telling another hobbyist about a lid they liked.

That is still one of our favorite parts of the FragTide story.

FROM ONE LID TO HUNDREDS

We kept reinvesting into the product.

What started as a solution for our own aquarium slowly became something much bigger.

As demand grew, we made a decision early on that has continued to guide FragTide:

Reinvest back into the product.

Our first CNC machine allowed us to prove what was possible, but as more people trusted us with their aquariums, we wanted to continue improving.

We reinvested the money we earned back into FragTide and eventually upgraded to a state-of-the-art CNC machine, professional tooling, and better equipment that allowed us to improve our precision, consistency, finish, and overall quality.

The goal was never just to make more lids.

The goal was to make better lids.

Today, we are approaching more than 750 custom aquarium lids created, and that number continues to grow.

But even as FragTide has grown, we have worked hard not to lose what made it special in the beginning.

TAKING FRAGTIDE NATIONWIDE

Creating the website was actually one of the hardest decisions.

For a long time, my wife and I were hesitant to create a website.

We both have full-time careers that require a lot from us, not only during the normal workday, but often beyond it.

We knew that putting FragTide online and opening it up to customers across the country could mean more orders, more responsibility, and more people depending on us.

And that was something we took seriously.

We never wanted FragTide to become a company that simply tried to produce as many lids as possible.

We didn’t want to become overwhelmed.

We didn’t want quality to suffer.

And most importantly, we didn’t want to lose the personal experience that had built FragTide in the first place.

But people kept reaching out.

Hobbyists outside of our local area were asking if we could make lids for their tanks.

Eventually, we realized it was time to take the next step and make FragTide available nationwide.

So we built the website and opened the doors a little wider.

Growth would never become more important than quality or customer experience.

We don’t simply want someone to send us a few measurements and disappear into an ordering system.

We want to understand the tank.

Because every reef tank is different.

And no two hobbyists seem to arrange their aquariums exactly the same way.

That is why we believe the conversation matters.

HOBBYISTS HELPING HOBBYISTS

We want you to feel like you’re talking to another reefer.

We wanted ordering a FragTide lid to feel like talking to another hobbyist about your aquarium.

Because that is exactly what it is.

The conversations we have today are really not that different from the conversations we used to have when someone came to the house to pick up a coral frag.

Those conversations help us understand what the customer actually needs before we ever begin cutting their lid.

We want our customers to feel comfortable asking questions.

We want them to feel like they are talking to someone who understands the hobby.

And we want them to know that we care about the final product sitting on top of their aquarium.

QUALITY OVER VOLUME

We never want to lose the personal side of FragTide.

We try to keep our weekends for ourselves and our family.

That balance is important to us.

It also helps us keep FragTide at a level where we can continue giving our customers the attention they deserve.

We don’t want to take on more work than we can properly handle.

We would rather produce a great lid for a happy customer than rush through orders just to increase volume.

At the end of the day, our name is on every lid that leaves our shop.

We want to be proud of it.

And we want the person receiving it to be excited when they put it on their aquarium.

MORE THAN JUST A LID

A custom aquarium lid may seem like a simple product.

But to us, it represents much more.

It protects the livestock that people care about.

It becomes part of the overall appearance of the aquarium.

And when designed correctly, it should look like it belongs on the tank rather than something that was added afterward.
